In search of extra grass, cows with a bent for the past uncover the old reservoir above the mill.
During a short stay in the Pré de la Vigne one of Sylvain Durey’s cows pushed its way down through a thicket of brambles, blackthorn and nettles, untouched by human hand for decades. Struggling to find a way out it revealed the reservoir, about 20 yards long, which used to feed the wheel of the mill.
The walls were totally hidden by matted ivy and invaded by ashtrees and hornbeam. But after four days with secateurs and the chainsaw, aided by Nickie Logue and Chris Thompson, English friends passing through, we were able to celebrate the recovery of this ancient space with a huge bonfire and raise a glass to the resourceful cow.
